Just a few more days until the official first day of summer (June 20) – that means a lot of us will be headed to the beach to have some fun in the sun. I absolutely love the beach and am so blessed to live in a place where they are plentiful, beautiful, clean and can be visited nearly year-round. I do admit that I have been to the beach in the middle of November freezing my a$$ off but still enjoyed myself.
Note that this does not say “beach body exercises” – what I mean by “beach exercises” is exercise that you can do… at the beach! Please also note that by doing said beach exercises you may in fact be steps closer to achieving a beach body if that is what you are interested in.
I was a mermaid in my former life. I’m serious!! I have loved swimming and being in the water since before I could walk. Swimming is a great low impact exercise and whether you are doing a breast stroke or just walking against the pull of the waves – you are getting in some calorie-burning.
Boogie Boarding (bodyboarding)
What I love about this is you can do it on your own or with others. If you’re competitive you can make it a game and see who can catch the biggest wave or ride the wave the longest. Work those leg muscles and get a great workout at the same time.
Beach Volleyball (or football)
Competitive much? Whether you are able to find a specified area with a net and boundary lines or just want to bump a ball back and forth with friends or family members – beach volleyball is a fun activity that is exercise too! If you want to keep it in the water you can do it that way – we will use a football for this and throw it back and forth to each other.
Walking/Jogging on the beach
If you like to walk or job in general, why not go to the beach and do it? You get a great view, your body works harder when walking or jogging in the sand and if you get warm you can jump in the ocean to cool off. Walking on the beach is usually a peaceful experience and I notice that when I do it I often end up walking further than I would have if I just went out walking in the neighborhood. Grab a friend and have a great conversation while you walk on the beach and check out the hot lifeguard… I mean beautiful ocean view. HA!
Other bonuses of working out at the beach: Get that Vitamin D most of us are lacking & get a nice tan (don’t forget to wear sunscreen).
